Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi have officially made the UK their permanent home, trading the bright lights of Hollywood for the rolling hills of the Cotswolds. What began as a temporary escape following the end of Ellen’s long-running talk show in 2022 has blossomed into a full-fledged love affair with British life.
The couple first arrived in 2024, just before the US presidential election results came in. “When we woke up to the news,” Ellen shared during a recent public appearance in Cheltenham, “we looked at each other and just knew – we’re staying here.” The political climate back home, including threats to same-sex marriage rights, played a significant role in their decision to put down roots across the Atlantic.
Now settled in their countryside home, Ellen gushes about the slower pace of life. “Everything is better here,” she says with visible enthusiasm. “The villages, the architecture, the people – there’s a kindness and respect you don’t find everywhere.” Her social media has become a love letter to British living, filled with picturesque landscapes and their growing menagerie of chickens and horses.
While acknowledging the adjustment to colder weather (“I saw snow for the first time in my life!”), Ellen clearly has no regrets about leaving behind the controversy that surrounded her show’s final days. “I’m direct, not mean,” she reflects about the workplace allegations. In the peaceful English countryside, it seems she’s found both a fresh start and a place where her straightforward nature is appreciated.
