The Message from the Woods

The Message from the Woods

My ordinary morning on the farm was shattered by a sight I will never forget. Two deer emerged from the treeline, their demeanor calm and deliberate. They did not startle or flee; instead, they watched me with a disconcerting intelligence, as if I were the one being observed. The smaller deer held my gaze with an unnerving steadiness, creating a silent, purposeful connection that defied all my understanding of the natural world. This was no chance meeting; it felt like a planned rendezvous.

My initial impulse was to dismiss the encounter as whimsy, and I even took a photo to share online. But then the smaller creature did the impossible. It approached the fence and, with a gentle nudge, deposited a small bundle wrapped in a dark, coarse cloth into my hands. My heart hammered in my chest as I unwrapped it to find a beautifully weathered wooden box. Inside rested a silver locket, its surface etched with intricate, unknown symbols that seemed to pulse with a silent, ancient energy.

As I looked up from the mysterious artifact, the deer began to retreat into the forest. The smaller one paused at the edge of the woods, turning its head to look back at me. The invitation was unmistakable. Compelled by a force I couldn’t name, I followed. They led me deep into a part of the woods I had never seen, to a clearing dominated by a colossal, ancient oak. Then, in the blink of an eye, the deer were simply gone, vanishing into the shadows without a sound.

Alone in the sudden silence, my eyes were drawn to the base of the great tree, where the earth looked freshly turned. I brushed away the soil to reveal a stone tablet carved with the same enigmatic symbols as the locket. Beneath it, a brittle parchment held a message in elegant script: “For the one who is chosen: The truth is not simple. Follow the signs. This is only the beginning.” I placed the locket in my pocket, the weight of it feeling immense. My quiet life was over; a mystery had chosen me, and the first chapter had just begun.
